An intimate, evocative and beautifully shot coming-of-age film by writer-director Adam Guziński, with a dazzling performance by teenage actor Max Jastrzębski. Set against a magical summer world of late 1970s, the film captures the innocence of childhood confronted by unexpected challenges of early adulthood.
It’s a beautiful, endless summer holiday in a small provincial town in the late 1970s. With his father constantly away for work, twelve-year-old Piotrek (Max Jastrzębski) has developed a very strong bond with his beautiful mother Wisia (Urszula Grabowska). Even though he did not go anywhere on holidays, his mother makes sure he has no reason to be bored in an otherwise boring little town. Cycling, swimming, playing cards together, it seems they both make the most of the perfect summer weather. Their special mother and son relationship becomes complicated when his mum starts going out almost every evening. Piotrek feels as if she is hiding something from him. He sees her becoming more anxious and less playful. Entangled in the affairs of adults, Piotrek feels lost and lonely. Spending time with his peers also brings new experiences, his first fascinations and disappointments. When his father Jerzy (Robert Więckiewicz) unexpectedly returns home, Piotrek is torn whether to tell him the truth about Wisia’s secret or stay loyal to his beloved mum.

This is an intimate, beautifully shot piece, which is both nicely-acted and assembeled. Performances are strong and under-stated, with the director keeping a firm hand on a tone which is pleasingly consistent. — Fionnuala Halligan, Screen Daily
