One of the most astonishing debuts of recent years about anxieties overpowering the modern society. In Panic Attack by Paweł Maślona, comedy and tragedy come together when seemingly unrelated stories of ordinary people lead to a dramatic climax showing how one’s entire world can collapse at any given moment. In a light manner the film touches critical issues people face in the 21st century, skilfully blending multiple genres.
Panic Attack comprises six stories about ordinary people put in extreme situations, which cause them to all experience a panic attack. A couple picks the worst seats on an airplane and struggles to get some sleep during the flight; a crime story writer bumps into her ex in a restaurant; a heavily pregnant bride is obsessed with having the perfect wedding; a teenager gets stoned for the first time; a young adult film star comes very close to being exposed by her girlfriends who unexpectedly pay her a visit, while a young waiter obsessed with a computer game begs his mum to save the universe while he serves clients at a wedding party. With the unexpected events unfolding, our protagonists’ patience is tested and reaches a breaking point.
The film light-heartedly touches on and mocks first-world problems people face in 21st century cities: virtual prostitution, addictions, succumbing to societal pressure, toxic family relationships and lack of assertiveness. Skilfully blending a number of genres, the film will appeal to those who seek entertainment, as well as those who are after a deeper reflection on the world around us.
