Masterfully directed by Jan Holoubek, "Doppelgänger. The Double" is a gripping psychological spy thriller entangling two men on both sides of the Iron Curtain. Recipient of multiple awards at the Gdynia Film Festival, it keeps audiences on the edge of their seats as they gradually comprehend the connections between the two characters.

Hans Steiner (Jakub Gierszał) lives a seemingly quiet life in bustling Strasbourg, where under his new identity he discreetly carries out espionage activities. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Iron Curtain in Gdańsk, devoted patriot Jan Bitner (Tomasz Schuchardt), passionately fights for a free Poland immersed in the Solidarity movement. Despite their disparate worlds, a subtle connection links them, setting the stage for a high-stakes game of deception and intrigue. With tensions escalating on both sides of the Iron Curtain, the fate of these two men becomes increasingly intertwined. While Hans meticulously feeds information to his superiors, his carefully constructed facade gradually crumbles as Jan's personal quest to find his birth mother inadvertently jeopardizes both of them.

Rooted in actual events of Cold War Poland and produced with great attention to detail, the film explores themes of identity theft and international politics and their profound impact on the lives of ordinary individuals.

Doppelganger was the opening selection of the 2023 Gdynia Film Festival, winning multiple awards including best director, best cinematography and best supporting actor.
